Nine years after the last flight of Concorde, the world’s only successful commercial supersonic jetliner, it seems as if supersonic air travel will make a comeback – at least for private jet travel – in a few years. Rapid advancements in building efficient supersonic engines and sonic boom mitigation technologies are addressing the two most serious obstacles for supersonic flight.
Leading aircraft makers such as Boeing, Lockheed and Gulfstream as well as smaller dedicated supersonic aviation start-ups such as Aerion have unveiled a number of innovative technologies recently and believe supersonic private jets should be a reality in about one decade.
